Welcome to this 8 week Latin dance course facilitated by Headingley Music Festival.  During the 8 week classes we will explore each dance style and learn the fundamental steps of each.  These are group classes, and you don’t need to have a partner.  Besides being a great introduction to some wonderful dances, these sessions provide a fun workout to fantastic music. Everyone is welcome.  Entrance £5/£4.00 concessions.

Merengue and Salsa

The official dance of the Dominican Republic, merengue is generally considered easy to learn, making it a great choice for those looking to ease their way in to Latin dancing.

Salsa is a dance and a musical style with deep Caribbean and African roots. It’s very popular in almost all Latin American, and among Latino communities in the United States. In recent years, this dance has also gained popularity in Europe and in Asia.

Rumba and Mambo

The Rumba is often referred to as the “grandfather of the Latin dances.” Originating in Cuba, it first came to the United States in the early 1920s. It is a slow and sensual dance.

The Mambo dance originated in Cuba as a mixture of Afro-Caribbean and Latin American cultures. The word “mambo” denotes an African origin, particularly from the Congo region.

Cha Cha cha

The Cha Cha Cha is a lively dance with African influences that developed in Cuba after World War II.

Tango

A sensual ballroom dance that originated in Buenos Aires, Argentina in the early twentieth century. Tango is danced to a repetitive style of music, with the count of the music being either 16 or 32 beats.
