SUMMARY:LCA Book Reading Group – ‘Death of an Old Master’ by David Dickinson
DESCRIPTION:The LCA Book Reading Group meets every Monday at 3 – 5 p.m. HEART\, Headingley. \n‘Death of an Old Master’ by David Dickinson – \nEngland 1899\, and the Salisbury Galleries in London announce the biggest exhibition of “Old Master” paintings ever seen in Europe. Excitement is intense\, but before the exhibition opens\, one of Britain’s leading art experts\, Christopher Montague\, is found dead in his study. When Lord Francis Powerscourt is called in to investigate\, he finds that every book\, notepad\, and scrap of paper has been removed from the scene of the crime. Montague had been working on something that would have rocked the art world. Did the article that claimed a number of the “Old Masters” had been painted recently by a single hand have anything to do with his death? \nPowerscourt embarks on an odyssey through a treacherous world of art dealers and picture restorers in pursuit of a master forger. He travels to Sicily where the trail grows cold\, but\, after the thrills and dangers of that lawless island\, it is in a remote corner of the English countryside where the truth is finally revealed.

SUMMARY:MBS evening with film: A Conscious Universe? – Dr Rupert Sheldrake
DESCRIPTION:The sciences are pointing toward a new sense of a living world. The cosmos is like a developing organism\, and so is our planet\, Gaia. The laws of Nature may be more like habits. Partly as a result of the ‘hard problem’ of finding space for human consciousness in the materialist worldview\, there is a renewed interest in panpsychist philosophies\, according to which some form of mind\, experience or consciousness is associated with all self-organizing systems\, including atoms\, molecules and plants. Maybe the sun is conscious\, and so are other stars\, and entire galaxies. If so\, what about the mind of the universe as a whole? Rupert Sheldrake will explore some of the implications of this idea. Rupert Sheldrake is a biologist and author of more than 85 scientific papers\, and was named among the top 100 Global Thought Leaders for 2013. \nEntrance fee £4.00/£3.50 members and concessions.

SUMMARY:The Carol Downing Memorial Walk.
DESCRIPTION:The walk is about 4 miles\, taking in a pretty stretch of the Aire and Calder Navigation and a circuit of Rothwell Country Park with fine views of Leeds from the top. \nMeet in Woodlesford at about 12.15 outside the Two Pointers pub (LS26 8RE). Car drivers should find street parking nearby. The train we are aiming for is 11.58 out of Leeds station\, arriving at Woodlesford station at 12.07. Assuming the train is on time it’s less than 5 minutes from the station to the rendezvous point. \nWe would aim to finish the walk at the Two Pointers Pub for refreshments. Bring suitable walking gear\, water and a packed lunch. The paths are good throughout with a steady climb to the highest point of the Country Park. There are no public toilets en route but the pub is scheduled to open at 12 noon so they may let you use the toilet there if necessary\, on the understanding that we will be returning to the pub after our walk. \nMy feeling is that any poetry or song we choose to perform should relate to our memories or thoughts of our friend\, Carol. \nIf you require further details\, phone Rob on 0113 216 4492 in good time or try 07421 043 614 on the day. Please only use the mobile number on the day as I rarely answer it otherwise. Ring the mobile if I don’t show up on time as it will mean that the train is late or cancelled.

SUMMARY:Theatre Visit: Dangerous Liaisons - Playhouse
DESCRIPTION:A story of sexual power\, cruelty and deceit.\nIn 18th century France\, letters fly between the mansions of two bored aristocrats as they spin a web of heartbreak and ruin. It might seem like a game\, but lives will be ruined and love irrevocably lost.\nFrom the original scandalous novel\, the acclaimed film starring John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer and iconic retelling Cruel Intentions\, this dangerous story has been thrilling audiences for over 200 years.\nThis bodice-ripping ballet\, choreographed by David Nixon OBE\, is set to Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons\, played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia.

DESCRIPTION:Nature has been our faithful companion in lockdown. In parks\, pastures\, allotments and gardens\, it has helped us through the tough times. Now\, a new botanical paradise is growing in the heart of the city as we transform the Quarry Theatre into a horticultural haven where a company of older performers will share their personal stories\, visions and dreams of times past\, present and future as they create the garden out of nothing before your eyes The Promise of a Garden blends performance\, dance\, music\, film and photography to create blossoming moments of joy and reflection as we begin to explore and gather strength in our new reopening phase

SUMMARY:Day Trip to Barnard Castle & Northallerton.
DESCRIPTION:Meet at Leeds Central Bus station outside Greggs. \nJoin us for a day trip to Barnard Castle & Northallerton.  Set on a high rock above the River Tees\, Barnard Castle takes its name from its 12th century founder\, Bernard de Balliol. It was later developed by the Beauchamp family and then passed into the hands of Richard III.  With fantastic views over the Tees Gorge this fortress sits on the fringe of an attractive working market town also known as ‘Barney’ so there is plenty to do for families on a day out. Try and spot Richard’s boar emblem carved above a window in the inner ward or visit the ‘sensory garden’ of scented plants and tactile objects. \nSet between the Yorkshire Dales National Park to the west and the North York Moors National Park to the east the town has been a centre of communications for centuries. Northallerton’s wide High Street is a pleasant busy shopping centre\, with many independent shops\, cafes and pubs. There is a busy market on Wednesday and Saturday. All seats are £15.00.  Social distance rules apply and all  places must be pre-booked in advance and only those from the same house-hold may be seated together. \nContact Anna: anna@leedscombinedarts.org.uk

SUMMARY:Theatre Visit: Piaf
DESCRIPTION:Born Edith Gassion in 1915\, no one could have predicted Edith Piaf’s phenomenal rise to fame – from singing in the streets of Paris to becoming one of France’s biggest international stars\, her voice is still revered to this day. But her extraordinary talent was matched with an equally extraordinary personal life. Pam Gems’ sensational and emotionally-charged play explores the highs and lows of the enigmatic yet fragile singer’s life and features some of Piaf’s most famous songs\, including La Vie en Rose\, Hymne à l’amour and Non\, Je Ne Regrette Rien. Piaf is directed by Adam Penford (An Enemy of the People\, The Madness of George III\, Wonderland) and stars Tony-nominated and Olivier Award-winning actress Jenna Russell in the title role.

SUMMARY:‘Talk on C. S. Lewis’ ‘Before Narnia’ with Claire Rae Randall.
DESCRIPTION:CS Lewis: Before Narnia\nCS Lewis is best known today for his Chronicles of Narnia but he was already an established figure in the popular imagination in the 1940s before Narnia was known to the world.\nIn his literary works he expressed a deep concern with the Problem of Evil and the corruption of humanity by demonic forces which he believed to be entirely real\, albeit in immaterial form. In this talk Claire Rae Randall will explore the spiritual and philosophic underpinnings of Lewis’s cosmology through works such as The Abolition of Man\, The Screwtape Letters and his Interplanetary Trilogy which influenced both the hugely popular Avatar movie and Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four.
