SUMMARY:LCA Walk Headingley & Meanwood.
DESCRIPTION:Join Rob on Thursday 1st April for a 5.5 mile circular from Meanwood Park via Woodhouse Ridge\, Meanwood Valley Farm and the site of the former Meanwood Park Hospital.  Meet at 12 noon in Meanwood Park near the café (LS6 4LE\, the internet tells me).  There is a free car park almost adjacent to the café but the park has been very busy during lockdown and this car park is almost always full during the day. There can be parking in the roads leading to the park but it may take a while to find a space\, which is fine if you come early enough to spend time looking for one. If you plan to arrive last minute it would be a better bet to park on the road on the other side of the park (Hollin Drive\, LS16 5NE). This is just 2 minutes’ walk across the park to the rendezvous at the cafe.  For those travelling on public transport the bus 51/52 from Albion Street; 51 goes nearer to the park.  The cafe in the park is excellent and has been offering take-away hot drinks and light refreshments throughout the latest lockdown. I suggest we stop there at the end of the walk. Unfortunately\, there are no public toilets available at the café or in the park during the current restrictions. I believe nearby Waitrose (a bit more than 5 mins walk away) has some.  Some paths may be muddy but are on the whole well maintained. Wear suitable gear and bring a packed lunch. The theme for poetry/song will be “Something humorous” (it’s 1st April). Please pre-book your place by contacting carol@leedscombinedarts.org.uk as numbers are still restricted.  Contact Rob for further information on 0113 2164492 / 07421043614.

SUMMARY:Theatre Visit: A Christmas Carol (Livestream).
DESCRIPTION:It’s Christmas Eve in Victorian Leeds\, but the cold-hearted Ebenezer Scrooge hasn’t an ounce of festive cheer.  \nAs the cold night draws in\, four ghostly spirits take Ebenezer on a magical journey through his past\, his present and his future\, hoping to show him the error of his ways. With Christmas spirit\, fun\, music and magic at its heart\, this timeless Charles Dickens tale is brought vividly to life.  \nWith all the joys of a festive family story\, the Playhouse is reinventing this production of A Christmas Carol from the Pop-Up Season in 2018\, based on an original production at Hull Truck Theatre. Adapted by playwright Deborah McAndrew and directed by Playhouse Associate Director Amy Leach (There Are No Beginnings\, Oliver Twist) A Christmas Carol will have integrated British Sign Language.

SUMMARY:Postponed - Theatre Visit: Double Bill Opera: Acis & Galatea / The Seven Deadly Sins
DESCRIPTION:We will let you know the new date when the play will be reschedule. \nJoin us for a Double Bill at Leeds Playhouse.  Simple country life collides with the sins of the city in this Handel/Weill double bill. \nThe evening opens with a contemporary take on Handel’s Acis & Galatea\, a light-hearted pastoral opera inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The nymph Galatea and the shepherd Acis are falling in love but when the monstrously jealous Polyphemus appears on the scene\, their happiness is threatened… Anthony Kraus leads a 15-strong orchestra through a beautiful score that swings from the joyous to the melancholic\, from the hearty ‘Happy We’ to the poignant chorus ‘Mourn\, All Ye Muses!’. Featuring Nicholas Watts (The Turn of the Screw) as Acis and Amy Freston (The Merry Widow) as Galatea. \nIn Weill’s jazzy The Seven Deadly Sins\, we meet Anna and Anna: one person\, two personalities. Sent away for seven years to make money for their struggling family\, they journey between seven cities from Philadelphia to San Francisco\, and encounter sloth\, pride\, wrath\, gluttony\, lust\, greed and envy on the way. As they do\, they dance\, sing\, argue and bear the sardonic commentary of their family. Weill’s playful and shimmering ‘sung ballet’ – his final collaboration with Brecht – is directed and choreographed by Gary Clarke (Street Scene) and features Wallis Giunta (Trouble in Tahiti) and dancer Shelley Eva Haden as the two Annas. \nFor any more information please call 07518 627109 or email: webcontact@leedscombinedarts.org.uk

SUMMARY:Theatre Visit: 'Signal Fires' at Slung Low\, The Holbeck
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an event with Slung Low at The Holbeck.  The UK’s leading touring theatre companies are uniting this autumn to present Signal Fires\, a nationwide project inspired by one of the original forms of theatre – storytelling around a fire. \nIn light of the current crisis\, the signal fires will create beacons across England\, Scotland\, Wales and Northern Ireland warning of the threat the industry continues to face while celebrating the extraordinary vibrancy of touring theatre and the freelancers they engage. Stretching across four nations\, this festival of fires will connect audiences\, freelance artists and touring companies together in a communal\, national act of storytelling. \nWhat’s going on at Slung Low? \nWe will light a bonfire in front of the club\, and have invited story-tellers\, poets and musicians to gather around it\, with you\, to tell tales lit by the flames. \nFeaturing Nima Taleghani\, Iain Bloomfield and music from Claire Marie Seddon and David Broad. \nThere will be a bar with table service in the car park. \nFor any more information please call 07518 627109 or email: webcontact@leedscombinedarts.org.uk

SUMMARY:‘Tolkien in Leeds Centenary’ – talk by Claire Randall
DESCRIPTION:JRR Tolkien started his academic career as a Reader in English Language at Leeds University in October 1920\, exactly one hundred years ago. \nIt is well understood how the landscapes he knew through his life contributed to those he described in his sub-creation of Middle-earth\, from the rural idyll of the Sarehole he knew as a child which influenced his vision of The Shire\, to the analogue of the trenches and No-Man’s Land in the Great War that he represented as the Dead Marshes\, but his time in Leeds is often overlooked as an influence on his imagination. \nAnd yet there are numerous tantalising parallels between landscapes he knew in and around Leeds and some of those he described in The Lord of the Rings. \nThis lecture will demonstrate these parallels with readings of the descriptive passages in Tolkien’s works and photographic landscape evidence.  For the student of Middle-earth locations and events such as Ithilien\, Woody End\, the Party Tree\, The Wapentake at Edoras\, even Lothlorien and the mysterious Amon Rudh from Beleriand in the Silmarillion can be found to bear striking resemblances to features in local landscapes that Tolkien will have known well. \nJoin us for an exploration into local landscape and historical features which in the leaf mould of his imagination may have contributed to inspiring some of Tolkien’s mythical landscapes. \nPlease Note: Social distancing rules will apply and places must be pre-booked as there is a limit on numbers. \nEntrance £4.00/£3.50 members and concessions including refreshments.
